Ellis signs with Tampa



Dan Ellis wanted to find a team that would give him a chance to compete to be the No. 1 goalie and a chance to win. He thinks he has that in the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Ellis, who played his first three NHL seasons in Nashville, has according to TSN signed a two-year contract to compete with Mike Smith for the No. 1 job in Tampa, a city experiencing a hockey overhaul this summer with Steve Yzerman coming in as GM and Guy Boucher as coach.

Pekka Rinne's emergence as the Predators' No. 1 goalie gave Ellis the chance to test his value on the open market starting at noon ET Thursday. Nashville GM David Poile had traded his negotiating rights had been traded to Montreal, but Ellis reportedly never got close to a deal with the Canadiens.

He was rumored to be in talks with several teams Thursday before finally striking a deal with the Bolts.

Ellis played 111 games for the Predators and went 50-42-8 with 10 shutouts. He posted a 2.64 goals-against average and .912 save percentage. Ellis signed a two-year deal just before the '08 Entry Draft, but halfway through the 2008-09 season Rinne emerged and stole the No. 1 job away from him.

In 31 games as Rinne's backup this past season, Ellis was 15-13-1 with a 2.69 GAA and .909 save percentage.

Antero Niittymaki's departure to San Jose opened the door for Ellis in Tampa Bay. Smith has not proven to be the answer there yet, and now he'll get serious competition from Ellis for playing time.

Bio bi UFA na kraju ove sada predstojece sezone, a u Tampi su hteli da ga vezu.
Nadam se da ce imati dobru sezonu i da ce predvoditi tim barem do PO.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Tampa Bay Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier(notes) had minor arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and is expected to recover in time for the start of training camp.

The club said the surgery was Tuesday in Tampa, and recovery is expected to take three to four weeks.

Lecavalier played 82 games last season and had 24 goals and 46 assists.

Training camp begins on Sept. 17.

Report: Lightning sign Downie



Restricted free agent Steve Downie has reportedly agreed to a new two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to TSN.

Downie, 23, is entering his second full season in the NHL. He had 22 goals, 24 assists and 208 penalty minutes in 79 games with Tampa Bay last season.

According to TSN, the two-year deal is worth $3.7 million.

Overall, Downie has 31 goals, 33 assists and 346 penalty minutes in 140 NHL games between Tampa Bay and the Philadelphia Flyers.

Downie was selected in the first round (No. 29) by the Flyers at the 2005 Entry Draft.
