Re: Montreal Canadiens

With new Anglo coach, Habs strike a nerve in Quebec's language debates
MONTREAL - Many Quebecers are throwing a few body checks at the
Montreal Canadiens today for choosing a unilingual anglophone as interim
head coach.
The team announced on Saturday that the job is going to assistant coach Randy Cunneyworth.
A
prominent sports writer in Montreal's La Presse newspaper wrote in a
column that the club has failed in its responsibility to protect and
promote the French language.
Some fans say they wouldn't be so
upset if the Habs had brought in a highly-regarded Stanley Cup winner
instead of an assistant without NHL head coaching experience.
Others say if the struggling team goes on a winning streak all will be forgotten.
Cunneyworth replaced the fired Jacques Martin, becoming the team's first non French-speaking coach in nearly three decades.
There
have been countless stories in Quebec in recent weeks about a perceived
regression in the use of French, inside the province and in Ottawa.

Montreal tabloid rips Cunneyworth for “another loss”
Le Journal de Montreal – the largest-circulation
French-language newspaper in North America — opted for a muted, subtle
front page spread this morning after the Canadiens lost their second
consecutive game under interim head coach Randy Cunneyworth:
Now, keep in mind Le Journal has been accused of sensationalism and “lacking truthfulness” when it comes to covering certain events. Here’s a snippet from a 2007 editorial that ran in the Montreal Gazette:
Le Journal is not an unimpeachable
source of information on the state of relations between majority and
minorities in Quebec. Just as it used to be said that the Mounties
always get their man, Le Journal always finds what it’s looking for –
even if it’s not really there.
But even knowing this, folks are still outraged at Le Journal’s treatment of Cunneyworth.
“My beef with the Journal’s front page is using English headline solely to ridicule Cunneyworth,” tweeted the Gazette’s Dave Stubbs. “That is garbage and nothing else.”
“I’d love to see how Le Journal would react if Cunneyworth’s Habs
suddenly won at a 125-point pace, and got deep in the playoffs,” added the National Post’s Bruce Arthur.
If you think this story will go away soon, think again. The topic made it all the way to Montreal city council this morning.
[Rough translation: "Opinion Poll: Quebec is 72% against a unilingual coach.

Re: Montreal Canadiens
Yup, they’re going to protest Randy Cunneyworth in Montreal
We’ve reached critical mass in Montreal when it comes to the French-English debate.
Randy Cunneyworth’s troubles aren’t just limited to what’s going on with the Canadiens on the ice, some of the people of Quebec are going to protest about him coaching the team while speaking only English.
No, seriously they are.
Mario Beaulieu, president of The French Quebec Movement, and Denis Trudel of French Movement Montreal will be holding a rally outside of Bell Centre on January 7 (link
in French, naturally) to protest what they call “the Anglicization of
the Montreal hockey club.” Beaulieu says that not having a coach that
speaks French is the last straw for a team that calls Quebec home, a
home where French is the primary language.
Making matters worse, in their opinion, is that there are just two or
three players capable of speaking French on the team as well. For a
franchise that grew up having all of the best players and coaches from
Quebec at their beck and call, the NHL becoming a global game has been
difficult for many Habs fans to swallow.
For now, they might not have to worry long about Cunneyworth if he
can’t get the team to win games. Then those fans railing about language
can push the Habs to hire Bob Hartley or Michel Therrien or Claude
Jodoin or Denis Savard to their hearts’ content and leave the rest of
the league knowing why most coaches won’t even bother considering
Montreal when looking for a job.
